How much does OCD treatment cost in New Zealand?

OCD treatment in New Zealand ranges from free to several thousand dollars. Public services via your GP and the Just a Thought course are free. Private psychologist fees are around $150 to $240 a session; Mindwell charges $199 + GST ($228.85). A course of ERP often takes 12 to 20 sessions, and health insurance may cover part of the cost.

Free and publicly funded options

Several routes to OCD help in New Zealand cost nothing beyond a GP visit:

  • Access and Choice through your GP practice. Many practices have Health Improvement Practitioners and Health Coaches who offer free, brief support without a referral. In 2024/25 more than 236,000 people used these primary care services. They suit mild to moderate difficulties and can be a first step, though they aren't a full course of ERP.
  • Health NZ community mental health services. Free, usually by GP referral, and intended for people with more significant needs; not everyone with OCD meets the threshold, and whether an ERP-trained clinician is available varies by team. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission reports that in 2024/25, 80.9 percent of people accessing specialist services were seen within three weeks of referral, which also means about one in five waited longer.
  • Just a Thought's OCD course. A free six-lesson online programme using CBT and ERP strategies, developed for New Zealand. It's a useful self-help option and works alongside therapy.
  • Helplines. 1737 (call or text, free, 24/7) and Anxiety NZ's helpline 0800 ANXIETY (0800 269 4389) offer free support and information.

The trade-offs with public care are waiting, eligibility and limited choice of clinician. The Commission has also noted that some people with higher needs have struggled to access specialist services in a timely way.

Private psychologist fees in New Zealand

TherapyRoute's 2025 Auckland guide put clinical psychologist fees at roughly NZ$180 to $240 per session, with the general private range for therapy around $150 to $240. Intern psychologists working under supervision were around $190, and private psychiatrist assessments around $550 an hour.

Mindwell's fee is $199 + GST, which is $228.85 including GST, for a 50-minute session. It's paid upfront at booking through Stripe, which adds a card processing fee of 2.9% + 60¢ (about $7.24 on a $228.85 payment). There's no referral cost, no travel and no separate initial consultation fee. You get a receipt for every session for insurance claims. Cancellations or changes need 48 hours' notice, otherwise the full fee applies.

How many sessions does ERP take?

NICE's OCD guideline frames treatment by intensity: up to 10 therapist hours for mild impairment and more than 10 hours for moderate impairment. The American Psychiatric Association's guideline notes that most people benefit from 13 to 20 weekly CBT sessions. Our OCD treatment page describes a typical course as 12 to 20 sessions.

Real courses vary. Someone with a single clear theme, who practises between sessions, may need fewer. Someone with several themes, long-standing avoidance or depression alongside may need more, or may move to fortnightly sessions later. Your psychologist will agree a plan after assessment and review it with you; there's no lock-in.

The arithmetic: what a course might cost at Mindwell

Using the GST-inclusive fee of $228.85 per session:

  • 10 sessions: $2,288.50
  • 15 sessions: $3,432.75
  • 20 sessions: $4,577.00

Add roughly $7 per session in card processing fees, so around $72 to $145 across a course. If you move to fortnightly sessions after the first few weeks, a 15-session course spreads over five to six months rather than four. Many people find it more useful to think about the cost per month, set against the hours OCD currently takes each day, than about the total.

Health insurance

Most New Zealand health insurance policies that cover mental health do so through an annual limit on psychologist or psychiatrist consultations, rather than paying for a whole course. Annual limits in the market range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, and several policies cover mental health only in narrow circumstances; our guide to claiming psychologist sessions on health insurance sets out the main insurers' terms.

At Mindwell's fee, a $750 limit covers about three sessions; $2,500 covers about ten. Some policies require a GP referral before they'll pay, and pre-existing condition exclusions may apply. Check your policy wording or call your insurer before you start, and keep your Mindwell receipts. Our health insurance guide goes into detail.

ACC: usually not, unless an injury is involved

ACC doesn't cover OCD as a condition in its own right. It covers mental injury only in specific circumstances: when it's caused by a physical injury that ACC already covers, when it results from sexual abuse or assault (sensitive claims), or when it is caused by a single, sudden traumatic event you experience, see or hear directly at work. Stress or anxiety on its own, or distress from simply being in an accident, isn't covered.

Mindwell is not an ACC provider, so sessions here are self-funded even if you have an ACC claim. If you've experienced sexual abuse or assault, ACC's Find Support service (findsupport.co.nz) and Safe to Talk can connect you with fully funded therapists. If OCD developed after a physical injury that ACC covers, talk to your GP or ACC case manager about whether a mental injury claim applies.

Making the money go further

  • Use the free Just a Thought course between sessions so paid time goes on exposure planning and review.
  • Agree a review point, for example after six sessions, and move to fortnightly when home practice is carrying the work.
  • Check whether your employer offers an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). EAP sessions are with the EAP's own counsellors and psychologists rather than Mindwell, but a few free sessions can be a useful first step.
  • If you're 25 or under, Gumboot Friday provides free counselling sessions through I Am Hope.
  • Ask your psychologist about session spacing early; moving from weekly to fortnightly once exposures are underway roughly halves the monthly cost without pausing the work.
  • Keep every receipt, as your insurer will need them for claims.

Fees

One clear fee for all sessions: $199 + GST ($228.85 incl. GST) per 50-minute session. No referral needed. A Stripe card processing fee (2.9% + 60¢) applies at payment. Many health insurers cover psychology sessions; we provide a receipt you can submit for reimbursement. See full fees and payment details →

Frequently asked questions

Is OCD treatment free in New Zealand?

It can be. Your GP can refer you to Health NZ community mental health services, which are free, but they prioritise people with more significant needs and not everyone with OCD is accepted. Access and Choice support at GP practices is free for milder difficulties, and the Just a Thought OCD course is free for everyone. Private treatment is paid for by you, sometimes with help from health insurance.

Why does Mindwell's fee show as $228.85 when the website says $199?

The $199 is before GST. New Zealand's 15 percent GST brings the total to $228.85, which is the amount charged at booking. Stripe's card processing fee of 2.9% + 60¢ is added at payment, roughly $7.24 per session. Your receipt shows the full amount for insurance claims.

Can I pay session by session rather than for a whole course?

Yes. Each session is booked and paid individually, so you're never committed to a block. That also means you can pause, go fortnightly or stop whenever you and your psychologist agree. You need to give 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a booked session, otherwise the full fee applies.

Will my health insurance pay for OCD treatment at Mindwell?

Possibly, up to your policy's annual limit for psychologist consultations, which commonly ranges from $750 to $2,500 depending on the insurer and plan. Some policies need a GP referral first, and pre-existing condition exclusions may apply. Mindwell provides receipts for every session; you claim directly from your insurer.

Does ACC cover OCD?

Not as a stand-alone condition. ACC covers mental injury only when it's caused by a covered physical injury, by sexual abuse or assault, or by certain traumatic events at work. If one of those applies, ACC-registered providers can offer funded treatment; Mindwell isn't an ACC provider. For sensitive claims, findsupport.co.nz lists funded therapists across New Zealand.

Is a short course worth it if I can only afford a few sessions?

Even a handful of sessions can give you an assessment, a clear map of your OCD cycle and a structured exposure plan to continue with support from Just a Thought's free course. NICE describes low-intensity ERP of up to 10 therapist hours as appropriate for mild OCD. Tell your psychologist your budget at the start; the plan can be built around it.

In crisis? Mindwell is not an emergency service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 111. For free 24/7 support call or text 1737, or call Lifeline on 0800 543 354 (7am to midnight).
