Book a SessionWhat is an anxiety disorder?
Anxiety becomes a disorder when worry or fear is persistent, out of proportion to the situation, and starts interfering with daily life, work, sleep, relationships or the things you'd normally do. Common forms include generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias and health anxiety. All respond well to evidence-based psychological therapy.
When worry stops being useful
Everyone feels anxious sometimes. But when worry becomes constant, when your body feels on edge, when you start avoiding things you used to do, anxiety has moved from a normal emotion to something worth getting support with.
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people in New Zealand seek psychological support, and it's also one of the most treatable. Our psychologists work with the full range of anxiety difficulties, including:
- Generalised anxiety and persistent worry, a mind that won't switch off, often with tension, restlessness or trouble sleeping
- Panic attacks, sudden waves of intense fear with a racing heart, breathlessness, or a sense that something is badly wrong
- Social anxiety, fear of judgement that makes meetings, social events or everyday interactions exhausting
- Phobias, intense fear of specific situations or things that leads to avoidance
- Health anxiety, preoccupation with illness and repeated checking or reassurance-seeking
How therapy helps
Our psychologists most often use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the most thoroughly researched psychological treatment for anxiety, alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches. Together you'll work out what's keeping the anxiety going, then build practical skills to interrupt those patterns: managing the physical symptoms, working with anxious thinking, and gradually reclaiming the things avoidance has taken away.
Therapy is collaborative and tailored to your goals. There's no fixed script, your psychologist will assess what's going on in your first sessions and agree a plan with you.
Does online therapy work for anxiety?
Yes. Research consistently shows that therapy delivered by video is as effective as in-person treatment for anxiety disorders. For many people it works better in practice: no travel stress, no waiting rooms, and sessions from a place where you already feel safe, wherever you are in New Zealand, including rural and remote areas.
Fees
One clear fee for all sessions: $199 + GST per 50-minute session. No referral needed. A Stripe card processing fee (2.9% + 60¢) applies at payment. Many health insurers cover psychology sessions, we provide a receipt you can submit for reimbursement. See full fees and payment details →
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral for anxiety therapy?
No. You can book directly with a registered psychologist through our online booking system, no referral or waitlist required.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Many people notice meaningful change within 6–12 sessions of CBT-based work for anxiety, though your psychologist will discuss a plan with you after your first sessions. There are no lock-in commitments.
What happens in the first session?
Your psychologist will spend the first session getting to understand what's going on, your symptoms, history and goals, and will start to map out an approach together with you.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person?
For anxiety, yes, research shows video-delivered CBT produces outcomes comparable to face-to-face therapy. All you need is a private space and an internet connection.
