Book a SessionWhat is depression?
Depression is a mood disorder involving persistent low mood, emptiness or loss of interest lasting two weeks or more, often with changes to sleep, appetite, energy and concentration. It is one of the most common mental health conditions in New Zealand, and one of the most treatable with evidence-based psychological therapy.
More than a low mood
Depression is more than sadness. It can flatten your energy and motivation, disrupt sleep and appetite, drain enjoyment from things you used to love, and fill your head with a harsh inner critic. Some people feel persistently empty or numb rather than sad. Many keep functioning on the outside while struggling privately.
Our psychologists work with the full range of mood difficulties: major depression, persistent low-grade depression, postnatal depression, and low mood tangled up with anxiety, grief, burnout or chronic health conditions.
How therapy helps
Evidence-based therapies for depression, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and behavioural activation, work on the patterns that keep depression going: withdrawal, inactivity, rumination and self-critical thinking. Therapy is practical and paced to where you are. Early sessions often focus on small, achievable changes that start to shift energy and mood; later work addresses the deeper patterns and life circumstances underneath.
If your low mood relates to grief and loss, psychologists like Inge Prince bring particular experience in that territory.
Online support, wherever you are
When getting off the couch feels hard, getting to a clinic across town can feel impossible. Online sessions remove that barrier: you meet your psychologist by secure video from home, anywhere in New Zealand. Research shows online therapy for depression is as effective as in-person treatment.
A note on safety: Mindwell is not a crisis service. If you're experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please contact 1737 (call or text, 24/7), Lifeline on 0800 543 354, or 111 in an emergency.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I'm depressed or just going through a rough patch?
If low mood, flatness or loss of interest has persisted most days for more than two weeks and is affecting your sleep, energy, work or relationships, it's worth talking to a psychologist. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from support.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis first?
No. You can book directly online, no GP referral, no waitlist. Your psychologist will assess what's going on in your first sessions.
Can psychologists prescribe antidepressants?
No, psychologists provide therapy, not medication. If medication might help, your psychologist can discuss this with you and suggest you talk to your GP. Therapy and medication are often used together.
What if I'm having thoughts of suicide?
Mindwell is not a crisis service. If you're in immediate danger call 111, or for free 24/7 support call or text 1737, or call Lifeline on 0800 543 354. For ongoing, non-acute support our psychologists can work with you alongside other services.
Ready to take the first step?
Booking takes just a few minutes. You'll be matched with an available psychologist and can have your first session from the comfort of your own home.
