Book a SessionWhat is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition involving obsessions, intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images or urges that cause distress, and compulsions, the repeated actions or mental rituals performed to relieve that distress. The most effective psychological treatment is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a structured form of CBT.
More than liking things tidy
OCD is often misunderstood. It isn't a personality quirk, it's a cycle of obsessions (intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images or urges that cause real distress) and compulsions (the rituals, checking, washing, counting or mental reviewing you do to make that distress go away). The relief is temporary; the cycle gets stronger.
OCD can attach itself to almost anything: contamination, harm, symmetry, relationships, morality or religion, or distressing intrusive thoughts that feel completely out of character. If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone, and you're not your thoughts.
ERP: the gold-standard treatment
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the most effective psychological treatment for OCD, recommended by international clinical guidelines. Working at a pace you agree together, your psychologist helps you gradually face the situations that trigger obsessions, while resisting the compulsion that usually follows. Over time, your brain learns the feared outcome doesn't happen, and the obsession loses its grip.
ERP is structured, collaborative and genuinely hard work, which is why doing it with a psychologist experienced in OCD matters. Our team also draws on CBT and ACT to support the work.
ERP works well online
Online ERP has a practical advantage: exposures happen in your real environment, your kitchen, your car, your front door, rather than in a clinic you'll never need to be calm in. Research supports video-delivered ERP as an effective format for OCD treatment.
Specialist OCD experience
OCD treatment is a core specialty at Mindwell. Our psychologists, including Sandy Laurenson and Candice van der Merwe, have extensive experience treating OCD with ERP and can also help when OCD overlaps with anxiety, depression or trauma.

Frequently asked questions
What is ERP and how is it different from regular talk therapy?
ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) is a structured behavioural therapy specifically designed for OCD. Rather than just talking about obsessions, you gradually practise facing triggers without performing compulsions, which breaks the cycle that keeps OCD going.
Can OCD really be treated online?
Yes. Video-delivered ERP is well supported by research, and online sessions mean exposures can happen in the real situations where your OCD shows up, often an advantage over clinic-based treatment.
How long does OCD treatment take?
A typical course of ERP runs around 12–20 sessions, depending on severity and how OCD presents for you. Your psychologist will agree a plan with you after assessment.
I have disturbing intrusive thoughts. Will my psychologist judge me?
No. Intrusive thoughts, including violent, sexual or taboo ones, are a recognised symptom of OCD, not a reflection of your character. Our psychologists treat them routinely and without judgement.
